The mystery of the Hasanlu lovers who have been kissing for 2800 years

Everlasting love, the age-old quest for perfect love, preserved in the kiss.

You might want to take your cue from the Hasanlu Lovers. Their gesture of love is an eternal kiss that survived for 2,800 years and they continue to intrigue archaeologists, excavators and regular museum-goers to this day.

The set of skeletons were discovered in 1972 inside a bin within the excavation site in Hasanlu, Solduz Valley, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran.

Since then, there have been many speculations about the skeletons’ sweet gesture of their shared kiss, and what exactly took place.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania discovered that the Hasanlu Lovers died around 800 BC, they estimate that the skeletons are 2,800 years old. The left skeleton is female and the right is male. Both were around 5 feet 2 inches tall.

Speculation on the cause of death is asphyxiation since the bodies were found inside a bin. Note the hole in the skull. No one knows their real story. Only they do. Perhaps one day we will find out what and why they were preserved for us to view and what the meaning behind their mysterious kiss is.

We only know that they once lived and loved each other and that even death could not keep them apart.
